Individuals who hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) are authorized to operate a specific class of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). Federal standards define three classes of CDLs, each corresponding to a particular group of motor vehicles.

Class A (Combination Vehicles) permits the operation of any combination of vehicles, as long as the towed vehicle(s) has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 10,000 pounds and has a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of at least 26,001 pounds. Tractor-trailers are an example of this class.

Class B (Heavy Straight Vehicles) refers to vehicles with a GVWR of at least 26,001 pounds for a single vehicle or at least 10,000 pounds for a vehicle being towed by another vehicle. Coach buses and transit buses are two examples of this class.

Class C vehicles refer to any vehicle or group of vehicles not included in Class A or Class B. These vehicles are used for the transportation of hazardous materials or sixteen or more passengers, including the driver. Hazardous materials include any substance that the US Secretary of Transportation has determined to pose an unreasonable risk to property or public health and safety during commercial transportation. Vans that can carry sixteen passengers are one example of Class C vehicles.

Additionally, some US states mandate CDLs for other uses or different kinds of automobiles. Similar to other kinds of driver's licenses, CDLs are typically granted by the DMV of a state. Other than that, a CDL is used similarly to a regular driver's license. It is a legitimate form of identification that can be used. A CDL holder can legally ride in passenger cars and get an endorsement for motorcycling.
