HISET is an acronym for "High School Equivalency Test." The HISET, which resembles other high school equivalency exams like the TASC and GED, is a substitute for earning a high school diploma. In other words, the HISET is a test created specifically for those who did not receive their high school diploma in the United States but want to show their ability to earn the equivalent of one!

Despite being a relatively new exam option for obtaining an HSE credential, the HISET is just as viable as the GED. In 2014, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) developed the HISET. Many U.S. states have accepted the HISET as an official option for high school equivalency testing, regardless of whether it is relatively new. Indeed, the HISET has become the sole option for high school equivalency testing in several states. Tennessee, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, and Iowa are the only states that provide the HISET for high school equivalency.

To take the HISET, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Age: The HISET exam typically requires a candidate to be at least 17 years old, however, some states have exceptions to this rule.
  • Residence: Another prerequisite might be residency. While some states have no residency requirements at all, others require you to provide proof of your address before you can register for the HISET!
  • Status of Your High School Enrollment: To take the HISET, you must withdraw from high school in most states. In certain states, taking the exam also requires enrollment in an alternative education program, such as Job Corps®, Options, Youth Challenge, or something similar.
  • Identity verification: On the day of the exam, you must provide identification.
  • Practice Exam or Directions: Before taking the HISET, you may be required by some states to take a practice test or finish an instructional course

What Our HISET Practice Test Includes

Let’s take an overview of our practice examination.

Overall, when it comes to the homepage of our website, what catches your eyes, at first sight, are two main sections: “Practice HISET Test By Topics” and “Take Full HISET Practice Test”. To meet the learners’ needs, the former functions as learning materials that are categorized into different topics or domains covering nearly HISET knowledge for practice. The latter mimics the real exam to check learners’ outcomes and create a chance for a mock test before taking the real one.

Practice HISET Test By Topics

The HISET practice includes a combination of multiple-choice questions, divided into 5 core sections:

  • Language Arts - Reading: Capacity to comprehend, decipher, and evaluate a variety of 400–600 word literary texts.
  • Language Arts - Writing: evaluates a person's capacity to understand and write in formal American English. Multiple-choice questions assess test-takers' proficiency in editing and revising written material to American English standards.
  • Mathematics: assesses arithmetic proficiency and understanding. The questions are posed as practical problems that are solved using numerical operations, measurement, estimation, data interpretation, and logical thinking. Some questions assess probabilities and algebraic patterns, among other abstract concepts. For this section, a calculator is permitted.
  • Science: determines your proficiency with scientific concepts, scientific information interpretation and evaluation, and application of science content knowledge. Results and information are presented using tables, charts, and graphs.
  • Social Studies: evaluates your knowledge of various subject areas, including geography, economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, politics, and history. Questions may include reading passages, primary documents, posters, animations, timelines, diagrams, tables, graphs, and charts.

Within each section, there are 7 levels and 2 tests, divided into 2 stages. Stage 1 includes the first 3 levels and a mini-test. Stage 2 includes 4 remaining levels and a final test. Each level includes 10 multiple-choice questions. The mini-test comprises about 30 questions covering knowledge of the whole first stage. The final test comprises 70 questions covering knowledge of the whole topic.

Remember! Our results recording system will notify you of the results you have achieved after your first attempt, for example, 6/10. However, you must answer all questions correctly to be allowed to move to the next level. Hence, you are allowed to do it again more than once and the false questions will automatically return until you correct all of them. Of course, if you are confident in any topic, you can skip levels and move to the mini-test or the final test immediately. For each subtest, you are marked from 1 to 20. To pass the whole test, you must score at least 8 out of 20 on each subtest. Nevertheless, the passing score of the total test is 45. It means that you have to score at least 9 on each subtest.

An extremely appreciated feature of our website is that after each question in the practice section, learners will immediately know whether their results are correct or incorrect. Furthermore, there will be an extremely detailed explanation for the question, which is right below the question section.

Take the Full HISET Practice Test

After practicing proficiently in the practice section introduced above, learners can choose an "HISET full test" to check their current level. The HISET simulates the real exam format.

The test includes 150 multiple-choice questions within 180 minutes. Contestants will take the test within the allotted time frame. The clock placed right above the question section helps test takers be proactive in managing their exam time.

An outstanding feature is that test takers will not immediately know the results of each question in this part like in the practice one. After completing all the questions and receiving the final results, test takers will have the opportunity to review all the questions to see which ones they got right and which ones they got wrong. Detailed explanations for the answers are also attached right below each question. This helps test takers review knowledge more deeply and gain experience for the next test, especially in the real exam.

For the convenience of use, we also released a mobile version of the application. Operations in the phone application remain the same as on the website. The only difference is that after completing the questions, you must click “Submit” to receive the final results of the test.

Some Tips To Get a Good Score On HISET

Students preparing for the HISET may use these useful techniques to boost their exam scores.

Have a strategy.

Find out what will be covered on the test, consider the topics you are most comfortable with, and create a study schedule. Allow enough time for your studies so that you won't need to "cram" new information right before the test. You'll likely need to prepare more if it has been a while since you last attended school.

Calculations

The mathematics subtest will allow you to use a calculator. You will be provided with a portable calculator at the testing location if you are taking the exam on paper. It will appear on the screen if you are taking the computer-delivered test.

Scratch Paper

Before the test begins, you will be given some scratch paper. If you require more, you can request it from the test administrator. Exam administrators will gather used scratch paper before providing you with additional sheets because you are only allowed three sheets at a time.

Breaks

If you are taking multiple subtests in a single day, there will be breaks in between them. If a break is necessary, you must get permission from the test center staff.  We would like to inform you that there will be no time extension granted to you, nor will the clock be stopped.

Take Practice Test

The most important strategy is that you have to find a user-friendly platform for practicing before taking the real test. Let’s dive into our HISET practice test website that mimics the actual real one to help test-takers be well-prepared for the upcoming test.

Practicing before taking any exam is extremely necessary. Finding a reputable and effective learning source is even more important. Each choice you make can determine success or failure. Trust me! The HISET practice exam will accompany you on the path to passing the HISET.
