Scholastic Testing Service (STS) developed the High School Placement Test (HSPT), a comprehensive placement test for 8th-graders that high schools employ to determine 9th-grade placement and admissions. The HSPT tests students on reading, mathematics, grammar, vocabulary, and logic. The purpose of the exam is to evaluate a student's academic standing and establish whether they are prepared for coursework in high school. This test involves multiple-choice items, with students having a set amount of time to complete each section. On the HSPT, there are normally five sections: language, reading, math, quantitative skills, and verbal skills.

The exam takes between 2.5 and 3.0 hours, depending on how long it takes to start and how many breaks are taken. It is administered in person at one of the institutions you want to apply to, on paperwork (not on a computer).

Calculator is out of permission. Writing an essay is not required. Be sure to respond to every question on the HSPT, as there are no penalties for giving the wrong answer.

The final score will be between 200 and 800 points.

What Our HSPT Practice Test Includes

Let’s take an overview of our practice examination.

Overall, when it comes to the homepage of our website, what catches your eyes, at first sight, are two main sections: “Practice HSPT Test By Topics” and “Take Full HSPT Practice Test”. To meet the learners’ needs, the former functions as learning materials that are categorized into different topics or domains covering nearly HSPT knowledge for practice. The latter mimics the real exam to check learners’ outcomes and create a chance for a mock test before taking the real one.

The HSPT practice includes a combination of multiple-choice questions, divided into 5 core sections:

  • Language: Students are tested on capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and related English concepts in this section. Additionally, there is a brief section towards the end that poses more complex questions requiring spoken reasoning.
  • Math: Although there may be the occasional strange question in the HSPT Mathematics section, the majority of the questions are fairly easy to answer. Along with the standard operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), measurements (make sure you know inches, feet, and yards!), some basic geometry and algebra, and—this is the part that some students find difficult—statistics and probability will also be covered.
  • Quantitative: Concepts from the HSPT Mathematics and Quantitative sections overlap significantly, but the concepts in the latter are presented more as word problems than as equations. In this section, students are expected to use specific concepts in the comparison questions. There are also some problems involving math reasoning, like determining the number that comes after a certain number by using the numbers that came before it.
  • Reading: It is divided into two sections: comprehension and vocabulary. Examinees will read a passage and then answer a series of questions based on it. There are two sorts of passages: literary (like a story) or informational (like a science topic).
  • Verbal: assesses a student's verbal proficiency in English primarily through vocabulary and a small amount of basic logic. In the HSPT Verbal section, synonyms, antonyms, analogies, logic, and verbal classifications are the most prevalent question types.

Within each section, there are 7 levels and 2 tests, divided into 2 stages. Stage 1 includes the first 2 or 3 levels and a mini-test. Stage 2 includes the remaining levels and a final test. Each level includes roughly 10 multiple-choice questions. The mini-test comprises about 30 questions covering knowledge of the whole first stage. The final test comprises the total of question banks covering knowledge of the whole topic.

Remember! Our results recording system will notify you of the results you have achieved after your first attempt, for example, 6/10. However, you must answer all questions correctly to be allowed to move to the next level. Hence, you are allowed to do it again more than once and the false questions will automatically return until you correct all of them. Of course, if you are confident in any topic, you can skip levels and move to the mini-test or the final test immediately. Indeed, there is no failing or passing score for the HSPT test. Nevertheless, the scaled score of this exam is between 200 and 800, so your mark must fall into that range. Remember, each school has a different standard “passing score," so try your best to get the highest score you can.

An extremely appreciated feature of our website is that after each question in the practice section, learners will immediately know whether their results are correct or incorrect. Furthermore, there will be an extremely detailed explanation for the question, which is right below the question section.

Take the Full HSPT Practice Test

After practicing proficiently in the practice section introduced above, learners can choose a "full test" to check their current level. The HSPT simulates the real exam format.

The test includes 150 multiple-choice questions within 90 minutes. Contestants will take the test within the allotted time frame. The clock placed right above the question section helps test takers be proactive in managing their exam time.

An outstanding feature is that test takers will not immediately know the results of each question in this part like in the practice one. After completing all the questions and receiving the final results, test takers will have the opportunity to review all the questions to see which ones they got right and which ones they got wrong. Detailed explanations for the answers are also attached right below each question. This helps test takers review knowledge more deeply and gain experience for the next test, especially in the real exam.

For the convenience of use, we also released a mobile version of the application. Operations in the phone application remain the same as on the website. The only difference is that after completing the questions, you must click “Submit” to receive the final results of the test.

Some Tips To Get a Good Score On HSPT

It's critical that students preparing for the HSPT use some useful techniques to boost their exam scores.

  • Guess Answers: You will not be penalized for answering a question incorrectly. It is preferable to make an educated guess rather than answer a question if you are unsure of the answer.
  • Process Instructions Cautiously: Whether you receive test instructions orally or in writing, be sure to take your time and focus on the material being provided. It might prevent you from doing something that will negatively impact how well you perform on the test.
  • Time Management: Don't take too long on certain questions and leave other sections of the test with short answers. You'll be able to see the total number of questions you need to answer as well as how much time you have left. Be sure to allow ample time to finish answering all of the questions.
  • Allocate Time for Review: Try to allow a few minutes more at the end so that you can review your answers before finishing the test.

If you handle these tips and get good preparation, you will pass the High School Placement Test with excellent results. In order to be well-prepared, let’s try our user-friendly website “HSPT practice test”.
